Chris Hansen - Chefs Eat Publishing

At the start of 2024, former restaurateur and current Canberra Times food reviewer, Chris Hansen, set out to create a different kind of food book - one that didn’t just rate restaurants, but truly celebrated them. After five months of interviewing, writing, editing, and photography, the first edition - Chefs Eat Canberra - was released in October 2024.

Hao’s Canberra is the second book that Chris has produced, in collaboration with his friend Hao.

Hao Chen - Chef and Restaurateur

Having grown up in China and after a decade working in restaurants in Sydney, Hao moved to Canberra in 2017 and opened Raku restaurant on Bunda Street.

For Hao, the greatest joy of being a chef is seeing customers’ satisfaction and hearing their feedback. Over time, he realised that a restaurant isn’t just a place that serves food - it’s a bridge connecting people. From sourcing ingredients to preparing dishes, to seeing guests enjoy them, a restaurant is more than a food factory; it’s a place where stories unfold. In the end, food is not the main character - the people behind it are.
